Lesson 2 : Aperture

For this week's lesson, we learned about aperture :)

An aperture is a hole or an opening through which light travels. It controls the amount of light entering the lens, and also affects the depth of field (DOF).

If the aperture is big, the background is clearer
If the aperture is small, the background is blur

A wide aperture has a small f number and gives a shallow DOF (less clarity). More light enters the lens.

A small aperture has a large f number and gives a great DOF (more clarity). Less light enters the lens

After the lecture given by Mr Vinod, we had to conduct 2 exercises about aperture :)

EXERCISE 1
We were to maintain the ISO and the shutter speed and to manipulate the aperture.
Here is the result of the exercise that i conducted xD

F5  S 1/500  ISO 200

                                                                 F5.6  S 1/500  ISO 200

                                                                  F8  S 1/500  ISO 200

                                                                 F11  S 1/500  ISO 200

                                                                 F16  S 1/500  ISO 200

F22  S 1/500  ISO 200
.

EXERCISE 2
This time ,we used the metering feature to determine the correct exposure.
For each consecutive picture, we had to increase the aperture but also maintaining the correct exposure for all shots :)

  F5  S-1/1000  ISO 200

 F5.6  S-1/800  ISO 200

 F8  S-1/500  ISO 200

 F11  S-1/250  ISO 200

F16  S-1/125  ISO 200

F22   S-1/60  ISO 200

From this aperture exercise, I found out that aperture really does effect on how our pictures will turn out. It is important to manipulate the aperture so that the light entering the lens is at the right ammount :) . Not only that, It was my first time actually shooting photos with "Manual " mode..hahaha.. Before this, I would always stick to using "Auto" mode as I find it easier to use. But come to think of it, "Manual" mode is actually better because we get to adjust the settings in order to get a good shot ^_^.
